Program Note
Vitório is a 20-year veteran of Angola′s 30-year long civil conflict. He′s lost a leg, and now in Luanda he′s lost the prosthesis he worked so hard to get to street kids. As he searches the city′s slums for it, he cobbles together a surrogate family that helps him in his hunt. Manu is an orphaned boy still looking for his father and Maria Bárbara is a bar girl who has lost her own children. The Hero is a parable of reunification as well as being the universal story of the eternal drive to survive and rebuild. Documentarian Zézé Gamboa′s first feature film is set in post-war Angola, but is as relevant to Eastern Europe, and Central and South America as it is to Africa. It is a film that serves to remind us that the political end to conflict leaves lasting wounds on scores of people. The Hero was one of only three films produced in Angola last year, and won the award for best film in the World Cinema competition at Sundance in 2005.
