Program Note
After Man-soo′s film fails at the box office, a creditor and gangster asks Man-soo to make his father′s wish come true. His suggestion is that Man-soo decorates settings similar to Gaemagowon, his father′s hometown, and makes his father visit that fake hometown. Man-soo inevitably accepts it and the creditor sets his man Sung-cheol in this weird project. However, it′s hard to deceive this old man. Since his debut with Out to the World, the road movie about the aimless trip of those who are deserted, Yeo Kyun-dong has made various films. His newest film, Silk Shoes, reminds us of the fresh energy of his debut film. The self-pity of Yeo Kyun-dong is bathed in the character of Man-soo who is a director living in poverty. The dementia of an old man who has left his hometown awakens the long-lasting feeling of loss of contemporary Koreans. It is a fresh black comedy which presents pleasant humor while questioning if the feeling of loss caused by the division of the nation can be consoled.
