An old man and a girl have lived for 10 years on an old boat before a remote island. The old man makes a living by giving rides to anglers with the girl′s help. He protects the girl from lewd fishers with a bow also used as a musical instrument. One day, a college student comes to fish and becomes attracted to her. He tries to take her to the land when he finds out the old man will marry the girl. Kim Ki-duk′s films are located in an isolated space from time to time and go into an abstract world. The Bow is one of the most abstract films of Kim′s along with Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring. The only set of this film is the ship where the religious symbol, the scar from violence, oppressed desire and the longing for arts coexist. The actions of the protagonists shown in this mythical place are astonishingly concrete and secular. However, at the very moment when the old man decides to marry the young girl, this film goes into the abstract world of death and salvation. This film displays beautiful and unusual images and an excellent imaginative power.
