Program Note
During the 19th century Chosun dynasty, a remote island of Donghwa-do has seen growth based on its paper manufacturing. A transport ship carrying paper to the palace burns into ashes An investigator Won-kyu is sent to the scene, and he witnesses a brutal myrder on the first day di his arrival. The disturbed village people regard the murder as the curse of the Christian, late commissioner Kang, who had his whole family executed seven years ago. Blood Rain is a unique genre film articulating historical dramas and melodramas to serial killer thrillers, reminiscent of Seven. The serial killer in this film is not a simple psychopath seized with the lure of murder itself but the victim of the political situation of those times, who has lost his lover because of others. Blood Rain is the work of Korean genre films and contains a realistic point of view along with the affection of genre films. The idea is brilliant, making the most of geographical characteristics of an isle and of a paper mill. And also, the set reconstructing the old times in Korea is outstanding with elaborated cinematography.
