Program Note
On April 1942, Filipino and American soldiers surrendered to Imperialist Japanese army in Bataan, Philippines. Although they were captured as war captives, they had some hope for basic welfare. The hope didn’t last long as some of them got shot for nothing, if not for joy of Japanese. 128km to go to the camp. Already wounded and tired captives had to fight against heat of the sun and diseases like malaria. They died one by one in hunger and thirst. The thin layer between life and death, illusion and reality got melted. The only thing that keeps them alive was the desperate will to last as a proof of this miserable history. The film shows the cloven foot of the horrific incident called Death March. During the march, more than 20 thousands out of 75 thousands captives were killed. The director Adolfo Alix Jr. wisely took the most of the low budget. The cartoon-like backgrounds of minimalism, the zombie walks of the massive casts, the slow motion to give depth in emotion were all part of the mechanism to terrify the audience. One thing that keeps the audience watching the film might come from the victims’ will asking not to repeat inhuman mistakes again. (PARK Sungho)
