Program Note
A new film by Jean-Luc Godard, the living master of the new wave. It fills the screen with images as an extension of Godard’s latest films. All kinds of images, spanning classic film footage, newsreel footage, photo images, paintings, text images and images he shot himself, have been selected and arranged. They speak for themselves through fragmentation and segmentation, delay and repetition, pause and continuation. Having no actors and no plot, the film challenges and violates cinematic traditions, questioning society and films in the digital age: What is a film in this age overflowing with records? What is film in this visual era of overcrossing media? What is film that is sustained by dramatic and stimulating material? Image Book is not a combination of image and book, but an “image book” made up of images. Just like his Histoire(s) du Cinema, which created the history of cinema with cinema. Image Book must be watched through images, not words. But if it must be summed up in words, it is a kaleidoscope of contemporary films and society, Godard-style. (Lee Seungmin)
