Program Note
The film is about three 1.5 generation Korean-Japanese. They are Director Kim Im-man, writer Park Sunam, and Uncle Park Choel-ung. The film explores the lives of these three men who aren’t accepted in either Japan or Korea, and are discriminated against for being “in-between-nationalities”. It does not, however, focus on their transient identities. In fact, it captures their daily lives as they persevere in the face of a harsh reality born of a divided nation. To some, the division between North and South is a cursory problem, but to those whose realities are bound up with that division, it is a matter of survival. The film helps us experience their lives through their words and expressions. Yet, can we really truly understand their lives? Taking us to and fro between Japan and Korea, first and second generation Korean-Japanese, and North Korean defectors and the displaced, the film approaches the question, then stops.(LEE Seung-min)
