Program Note
The film begins from the rooftop of an apartment, where grandmother and her granddaughter spread out red peppers to dry in the sun; it ends with the two gathering up the peppers, only this
time the mother has joined the scene. In between, father and son participate in this process by cleaning the peppers and taking them to the rooftop to dry again. The ritualistic event, held by
grandmother, serves as a family gathering even if it is done individually, and provides this indifferent family a chance to converse with each other. Since the drying process happens at home, a domestic
realm, this event is especially meaningful for women. The film′s goal to achieve reconciliation among women in the family is fulfilled when they gather on the rooftop and the act of filmmaking is
revealed at the end. The film also uses reenactment as a filmic device, as the grandmother plays herself and comments on her role just as the mother does. Such reenactment functions to defuse the boundary between reality and film. Making Sun-dried Red Peppers achieves the dialectic unity of content and form by providing a place for mother and daughter, as well as for the mother and her mother-in-law, to
examine their trivial daily lives from a distance through the ′frame′ of the film. (Kim Sun-A)
