From a sabotaged land comes the cries of a man who wants a boy for one dollar per day. Children all of sudden come out from everywhere and run to him to get this job. Among them, Giah, who is mentally disabled, runs the fastest and gets hired. He becomes a ‘human-horse’ for an affluent boy who lost his legs during a war. This is a shocking movie made by the young Iranian female director, Samira Makhmalbaf, who is well-known for her previous works, The Apple and The Blackboard. Giah chooses to be a human-horse for his survival, and his master, who is even younger than him, is evil with an angelic face. It is hard for the audience to acknowledge the fact that this film is not simply created from the director’s imagination, but taken from reality. This leads to the question: what has the director seen in the real world and put into the movie? Giah’s performance is almost miraculously perfect; his face is both beautiful and ugly at the same time, both of which can never be directed with artificiality. But what the director actually stages is the attitude of the audience who confront this astonishing tragedy throughout the movie. (KANG Sowon)
