New Currents Award

The only featured competition at PIFF is awarded in ‘New Currents’ section. The New Currents Award serves to promote emerging film talent in Asia by selecting the best new film by an Asian director. Selected by a jury of eminent film professionals, the awards guarantee a 10,000 USD cash award to the winning director.

    In recognition of the importance of finding an international audience for Korean cinema, the Korean Cinema Award is granted by PIFF’s Organizing Committee to those who have made significant contribution in introducing Korean films to the international film community. This year’s recipient is Eva ZAORALOVA, artistic director of Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF). She selected Peppermint Candy, by Lee Chang Dong, for competition at KVIFF 2000 and held a retrospective of Hong Sangsoo with his three films the same year. This year, KVIFF screened around 30 Korean films, including Bongja by Park Chul-Soo, in competition, “New Korean Cinema”, a special retrospective of Korean films, was a particularly good occasion to introduce Korean cinema to the film community of Easter Europe.
