Program Note
Ayoung is a young woman living a less-than-humble life working as an assistant at a dermatology clinic. Although Ayoung barely make ends meet on a miserable salary earned by popping pimples, she has a secret. She dresses up to shop through expensive high-end apartment spaces she tells realtors she wants to move into or department stores to pretend to buy things totally out of her league. She boasts to colleagues about a rich boyfriend she’s about to marry, adding that and will soon be distributing her wedding invitations. Obviously her real boyfriend is not rich. He is just an employee at a car dealer’s shop who tries to make her happy by driving her in foreign cars displayed at his workplace. As Ayoung’s lies continue, she loses respect from her colleagues, and it is only her boyfriend who believes he can guide her into the right direction. Will Ayoung be able to escape from her own prison of vanity? As the film observes the behavior of an individual, it merciless exposes psychological illness caused by the negative impacts of Capitalism. (NAM Dong-chul)
