Hermogenes is an illiterate man from a rural area. In the city, he struggles to make ends meet working for a butcher’s. One day, his boss suggests that he should serve as the manager of his failing butcher shop. Working in the small space with his wife all day long, Hermogenes fulfills his duty as manager and revitalizes the business. However, his profit-oriented and unscrupulous boss forces Hermogenes to make rotten meat look fresh by soaking it in Clorox every night. Hermogenes’ purity also goes bad. The Boss, Anatomy of a Crime<, based on a true story, is the feature debut by Sebastian Schindel who has directed a number of documentary films. Using a dual plot composed of a courtroom drama and flashbacks, the film vividly describes the unethical and unscrupulous practices in the context of South American society’s corruption and labor exploitation. It is worth observing how the director skillfully juxtaposes the psyche of the main character, whose murder is caused by the ruthlessness of his boss, and the visceral image of the rotten meat.
