Program Note
Leaving behind the immense success he had in Paris, artist Marc Chagall returns home to Vitebsk. There he falls in love with Bella, gets married and produces copious paintings. After serving as Commissar of Plastic Arts for Vitebsk, Chagall sets up Vitebsk People’s Art College, devoting himself in education. Nevertheless, Chagall suffers greatly from the impact of the October Revolution sweeping across Russia. Furthermore, he experiences conflicts with Kazimir Malevich, an artist of absolutism who is at once a friend and an enemy to Chagall. Russia’s legendary filmmaker Aleksandr Mitta is back after a 10-year break to tell the story of Marc Chagall. Chagall-Malevich focuses on the golden days of Chagall’s life spent in his hometown, Vitebsk around the time of the October Revolution. Even amongst the political turmoil, Chagall produces some of his most representative works including ‘Above the Town’ and puts a lot of effort into improving education. The film brings to light the reason why Chagall is forced to relocate despite such endeavors, emphasizing the artist’s human side. In addition, the surrealist images of Chagall’s paintings on the screen make us feel as if we are watching a moving exhibition creating a fantastic atmosphere. (Jin PARK)
