Program Note
The film strictly follows Er Dong’s daily routine excluding any exceptional techniques or mechanism. Er Dong’s mother sends her troublesome son to a Christian missionary school. There he meets Chang’e and they leave school to live together. Being the breadwinner, Er Dong starts to work at brickfield and quarry but his earnings were meager. Eventually he gets involved with illegal logging and finds himself in a difficult situation. He also finds out that his mother is not his real mother, and that he was picked up at the ‘Baby Selling Stone’ at the entrance of the village. He decides not to sell his own child and to leave the town. The director doesn’t focus on the dramatic structure or emotional alteration of the character. He stubbornly follows a form of description like a documentary. In this dry and tastelessness way, the audience can directly experience Er Dong’s dreary life. (KIM Ji-Seok)
