Program Note
A husband finds a fugitive in his home and thinks his wife has betrayed him. He accidentally dies, stabbed by a knife he meant for others, and his wife gets arrested with an unjust accusation. The prosecutor of her case turns out to be her student as a little boy and he struggles to prove her innocence. In 1948 when talking movies were already the majority, director YOON Dae-ryong, who started his career as a film narrator, makes A Prosecutor and a Teacher a silent film. It might have been a last attempt to preserve a place for film narrators. For whatever reason, A Prosecutor and a Teacher remains the only glimpse of what silent films were like, for now there are no other silent films left to see in Korea. The film rouses nostalgia with its sentimental rhythm shifting from C.U.s catching profound facial expressions to long takes that provide the narrator with the time to explain the plot.
