Program Note
A film about the rather banal lives of two teenaged delinquents. Unlike many teen films that portray the passionate love and energy of youth, this film draws a portrait of two disempowered people without much of a future. The everyday lives of these two teenagers - who steal motorbikes, extort money from kids, and engage in hapless fistfights - are drawn by Yang Heng like a sun dappled landscape. The lazy summer days of the protagonists are portrayed with long, languid shots as if he himself is remembering his own youth. It is here that Yang also faces a dilemma: By portraying the lives of these teenagers, which are bereft of much hope, like a joyful summer vacation, this film conveys a sense of tranquility rather than human desperation. Even the scene where the two lovers separate is anticlimactic. The moment the girlfriend leaves her boyfriend and boards the departing boat she falls asleep. To director Yang, the narrative seems less important than the inserts that connect this film. [Betel Nut] is a uniquely stylish film. (Kim Ji-seok)
