Program Note
Silent Holy Stones proves how thin the line between documentary and drama is. The film does not tell story but portrays the everyday life of boy lama and the people around him Tibet. There is no dramatic event taking place. The film is like live show of ordinary people. To maximize such reality, long-takes on fixed camera and long shots are used. The Tibet lamas as well as the village people are local villagers. The theatrical actors are real Tibetan opera singers. The most dramatic part of the story without beginning or an end probably when the camera catches the boy lama′s childishness. The boy lama his red garment wearing monkey mask holding his favorite TV series CD box to his chest. The short front shot of the boy tells everything about him. The life of lama the mountainous Tibetan village could seem somewhat unfamiliar at first. But in the end, we learn that the people in the village are not so much different from anyone of us. Director Caidan Wanma majored film at Beijing Film Academy after majoring Tibetan language and culture. He gazes upon the ′not different everyday life of seemingly different people. (Kang So-won)
