There are minorities in every society, and those minorities need an object to rely on, be it power or a lover. Soon-hee, a single mother estranged from her husband, is a minority in multiple senses. She is a Korean-Chinese living in China, a single parent, and moreover, underprivileged. No one can blame her for relying on the men around her, like Kim and policeman Wang. However, reality often only gets harsher for minorities. Devastated by the betrayal of the men she had counted on and by the loss of her son, Soon hee′s anger explodes, leading her to sow the seeds of death during grain planting season, which is implied in the original Chinese title. Director Lu Zhang′s direction is fascinatingly restrained, guaranteeing the conveyance of the leading character′s ironies in her agonies. The world seems so peaceful in the film, while Soon-hee is faced with unbearable tragedy. A scene where Soon hee passes a parade of dancers is transited to a shot of her passing a parade of ambulances, and the tragedy of an individual person is starkly contrasted with the indifferent world.
