Program Note
In the old times the “Mus” (shamans) were the priests who regulated the peace and welfare of the nation and its peoples. Through diligent historical research, the film depicts the traces of the Korean Mus, whose significance and meaning remains ambiguous today. The film presents a number of material and extraordinary visuals to reexamine the audiences’ preconceptions of the Mus. Also, by depicting the lives of the Mus without sensationalism, but with engaging warmth, the film makes the audience feel intimate with Mus. At the exorcism of a prosperous fishery held at the city of Pohang every 5 years, the film shows a festival that consoles the tired bodies and souls. The film also shows the “Seseummu” of the southern Han River area, “Gangsinmu” of the central region, and “Jindo Ssitgim Gut” through Dangol sisters. Gradually, the audience will start to understand the lives of the Moos, the sentiment of ‘Han’ that remains deeply engraved in their spirit, their fate to listen to the voices of the dead, and their nevertheless positive outlook on life.
