Program Note
The film documents the life, art and troubles of the late Ren Hang. He was a Chinese photographer and poet who took nude photographs of his friends with a cheap digital camera. While his controversial work faced censorship, he gained ardent support from young Chinese fans and the world. It’s thoughtless to dismiss his work as a lascivious protest against social taboo: What he considers natural happens to be banned by society. Ren Hang ends up committing suicide at the age of 29. The film crosscuts between the artist’s views on censorship and his daily life and work, showing the impact of social oppression on an individual’s depression. The director, however, does not portray Ren Hang as a tragic figure. He employs a carefree style, using colorful filters, split screens, frames in different sizes and shapes, and smartphone cameras to remind us of what Ren Hang said. “When we discuss degrees of freedom, we’re not free. Freedom comes when the word freedom no longer exists.” (CHO Hyeyoung)
