Program Note
Once a talented violinist, but now dulled by life, Simon is freshly inspired by his student Arnold. Chubby and shy, Arnold is a born musician, whose passion will lead his class and Simon, to a triumphant yearend concert at the Paris Philharmonic. Orchestra Class is a music film about elementary school students from a disadvantaged area becoming acquainted with classical music. The mix between the finicky and temperamental violin and the easily distracted grade school children seems to be odd at first. Still, the director stresses that music can overcome prejudices in two scenes: when Simon first demonstrates in front of the class, and when he plays in front of one student’s parents. During these touching scenes, the camera closes on the characters. At that moment, all lines between class, race, age, and knowledge disappear. The film talks about hope for humanity through the children and Simon, as they become one through music. It clearly demonstrates director Rachid Hami’s wit and warm sensibility. (RHEE Souewon)
