Program Note
From his debut film Daniel and Ana to After Lucia and Chronic, Michel Franco has talked about the choices people make when they are in extreme situations. His films always ask the audience to respond to the choices made. Whether they accept or flinch is another choice they have to make. April’s Daughter premiered in Un Certain Regard at Cannes this year and received the Jury’s Prize. It deals with an Electra complex by describing the tensions and conflicts among April, her two daughters and her granddaughter. The unique maternal instinct of April, the frustration of her daughters, her obsession with a granddaughter and her desire to steal her daughter’s man break are not suppressed under the system and emerge as actions and events. The director’s effort to foreground forbidden desire beyond displacement and foreclosure is reminiscent of Almodovar’s cinematic world on the face of Emma Suarez in Julieta. (Jin PARK)
