Program Note
Actor Park Joong-hoon makes his directorial debut with this tale of a talent manager, Taeshik, who is discovered as an actor himself and sees his success quickly surpass that of his prior client. But Taeshik is compelled to hold on to his stardom through any vile means necessary. He recalls Alain Delon’s Tom Ripley in Purple Noon. As Tom Ripley had wanted everything the millionaire and his girlfriend had, Taeshik also wants everything that his former employer Wonjoon had. Having taken the blame for Wonjoon’s drunk driving and gone to prison for it, Taeshik is able to land a minor role and soon rises to stardom. Wonjoon is at first happy for Taeshik, but as his popularity increases he begins to feel alarmed. At the same time, Taeshik also wants to have Wonjoon’s girlfriend for himself. The film runs a circle around Taeshik’s success and eventual collapse. At the peak of his success, Taeshik can’t stop his ambition, and ends up badly hurting Wonjoon. Even knowing that what goes around comes around can’t stop Taeshik once he has tasted sweet success. (NAM Dong-chul)
