Program Note
The director Wang Bing has been renowned for his direct point of view in harsh reality which creates mind-bubbling impact. His latest film is a documentary about a hospital in Yunnan Province in China. More than 200 people are involuntarily locked there for various reasons. Some committed murder, but most of them seem to be abandoned from the society only because of minor issues. Without any hope, they have become ghost-like in a poor facility of cold concrete. They are not treated well. All they can do is to sleep, to smoke habitually, to walk along the fence, to dress and undress repeatedly, to urinate in a bucket under the bed or so. Sometimes screaming or running, but they fear of the loneliness most. They haven’t seen outside world for long time, but the family or friends rarely visit them, either. As a human being, they lust for physical relationships which are lacked otherwise. Thus, the patients develop their own relationships among themselves to console their misfortunes. This creates a new world which has nothing to do with mortality or judgement of outside world. The running time of 227 minutes feels like a short sigh. (PARK Sungho)
