Program Note
Theresienstadt was a unique place of propaganda which Adolf Eichmann, one of the major Nazi architects of the Holocaust, called the “model ghetto”. It was designed to mislead the world and Jewish people regarding its real nature; the last stop before the finality of the gas chamber. Benjamin Murmelstein, was the last president of the Theresienstadt Jewish Council. Murmelstein was forced to negotiate day after day from 1938 until the end of the war with Eichmann. Surprisingly, at Eichmann’s subsequent war crimes trial, Murmelstein wasn’t even called to testify. This is despite the fact that Murmelstein was without a doubt the one who knew the Nazi executioner best. More than twenty-five years after Shoah, Claude Lanzmann’s new film reveals that despite the widespread belief that the world knows everything about the Holocaust, there are still little-known yet fundamental aspects of this horrific event that have remained unexplored. The Last of the Unjust sheds light on the origins of the “Final Solution” like no other film ever before.
