A young Australian couple adopting from India fall into a bureaucratic nightmare in Calcutta when they go to collect their daughter. While they wait for the adoption to be completed, Fiona and Ben come to learn some hard truths about themselves and each other. Fiona works by remote while Ben embarks on a pseudo-quest to find new experiences in the city. Where Ben seems to take his new environment in stride, Fiona becomes increasingly frustrated. Eventually, they turn grievances on each other. Simmering resentment and long-held secrets come to the fore, and Fiona and Ben are forced to ask themselves if they should be parents, and even if they should be married. As a complement to the couple’s disintegrating relationship, Calcutta’s vibrancy and color are captured in exquisite cinematography as powerful and telling as the journey to rediscovery Fiona and Ben take.
