Program Note
How is the independence of women possible in conservative Islamic society? Even though ‘Bangladeshi cinema’ sounds a little strange, the question raised by Mostofa Sarwar Farooki is a familiar one beyond the border. The film starts with capturing Luna, who looks unstable as if she is chased by someone on the street at night. She has nowhere to go right now. After her social activist husband was imprisoned, she realizes that she, despite being an independent subject, is also being locked up in an iron social cage without her husband. In the society where it is tabooed to rent a room to a woman who lives alone, she decides to depend herself on another boyfriend. The film follows a woman in the process of searching out ways of independent selfesteem, who once believed in herself as a complete independent person but happens to realize the discriminating gender orders in a stubborn society. Although it is a little conventional feminist theme, it is not presented conventionally. The film breathes commercial touches through the romantic moods between Luba and a rock star boyfriend who helps her, while full of distinct and exotic energies which show documentary viewpoints carrying out the realities arresting her but also experimental techniques representing multiple selfhoods at the same time.
