Program Note
It is the middle of Paraguay’s Chaco War. The film begins with an extended shot of a couple hanging a hammock. Ramon and Candida wait patiently for rain, for cooler weather, and for word from their son, fighting in the war. Shot in a still, minimalist style, the uneventful yet tense life of the couple is one filled with reflection, loss and the simple passage of time during their wait for something better. Paraguayan Hammock is the first feature film to come from Paraguay’s almost non-existent film industry since the 1970s.
