Program Note
Grace Lee. It seems that we all know someone called Grace Lee. The name is the quintessential name for Asian-American women, and the director Grace Lee has used the moniker as a springboard into an investigation of gender, ethnicity and identity. The genesis of the project came to her when she realized that there were thousands of Grace Lees outside of her Missouri hometown. They were Harvard graduates, God-fearing Christians, musical wunderkinds, good girls. Lee decides to find as many as she could so that she would be able to deconstruct the image of Grace Lee as a dull, conservative, unmemorable girl and give life to the various Grace Lees that were out there. In doing the research-via gracelee.net-and making the film, Lee had her fears confirmed, her hopes fulfilled and was constantly surprised by her findings. One of the most humorous, engaging and insightful films on race and womanhood in contemporary America produced in several years-and easily understood by anyone ever pushed into a pigeonhole for any reason.
