Program Note
One does not expect a documentary about a serving politician to be moving, inspiring, and enormous fun. Georgina Beyer, the Member of Parliament for Wairarapa in New Zealand, and the subject of this most enjoyable film from Annie Goldson and Peter Wells, is about as far from your ordinary politician as it is possible to go. With remarkable candor, the Maori transsexual and former sex-worker, who in 1999 became a Member of Parliament, tells her story. Using interviews and archival footage, the film-makers recount Georgina’s troubled rural childhood, her coming out in 1960s Wellington, discovering drag, prostitution and homophobia, and her move to a conservative country town. She became mayor and finally got elected to parliament, provoking intense tabloid interest. In the words of Georgina’s maiden speech to parliament, she is “the stallion who became a gelding, the gelding that became a mayor, and the mare who finally became a member.”
