Program Note
Cheng Yu-chieh’s Summer, Dream, which won the ‘best short film award’ at the 2002 Taiwan Golden Horse Film Festival, is about a boy who lives in the Taiwan countryside. Hsia Chih is unable to study abroad due to financial problems. He stays in his hometown and spends the summer working at his grandmother’s shop. But one day when Elisa, the new elementary school English teacher, moves in, Hsia Chih’s tedious summer days are forever changed. A grandmother who never even went near a school, a western girl faraway from the place she wants to be, and a boy who feels a strange attraction towards her. What will become of this strange threesome? A stable yet subtle structure, and a production that adequately captures the inner feelings of the characters…these and many other traits announce the arrival of yet another talented director from Taiwan.
