The 27th Busan International Film Festival Resumes ‘Forum BIFF’
The Jiseok Film Institute of the Busan International Film Festival will resume ‘Forum BIFF’, a venue for in-depth discussion and debate on cinema.
From Serial Dramas to Digital Visual Effects (VFX) and Documentaries!
Advancement of Film Against COVID-19
Opening the Discussion on ‘What is Film?’
Busan International Film Festival’s Jiseok Film Institute was established to conduct activities, such as research, interaction, and education related to Asian cinema, in honor of the late deputy director Kim Jiseok. Forum BIFF, which was put on hiatus due to COVID-19, will resume this year in order to provide an opportunity for various film professionals to meet and interact with the audience.
This year’s Forum BIFF will provide various sessions on a wide range of topics that are based on the fundamental question of “What is Film?”. A session that redefines the concept of serial dramas and films, and how this concept can be applied to institutions and policies; another session that observes the history and present of digital visual effects (VFX) and the current status and potential of extended reality (XR); and a session to discuss documentaries, which are considered to be the opposite equivalent to digital visual effects, are scheduled at the forum.
Forum BIFF is generating high expectations as a venue for the joint-intelligence of the film industry that seeks insight and vision on the rapidly altering media environment in the post-pandemic era. This year, Forum BIFF will be co-hosted by Busan International Film Festival, Korean Film Council, Korean Federation of Film Archives, and Busan Film Commission.
First, a discussion on new perspectives in 21st century documentaries is scheduled to be held. This session will look into the aesthetical and technical development of documentaries with the advancement of filming equipment and techniques, and explore their possibilities and applications. The participation of acclaimed French film critic, Jean-Michel Frodon, who will be giving a keynote presentation, as well as various domestic and international documentary directors, such as co-directors of Leviathan (2012) and De Humani Corporis Fabrica (2022), Verena Paravel and Lucien Castaing-Taylor, and Kim Il-rhan, director of The Remnants (2016), is creating heightened anticipation.
Furthermore, Forum BIFF will provide insight on the reconstruction of cinema by film professionals from Korea and abroad. This session will open a two-fold discussion on the weakening position of theaters with the expansion of over-the-top (OTT) video streaming platforms, and the changing concept of film with the premiere of serial dramas on OTT platforms. Referencing the recent achievements of serial dramas from a cinematic and artistic perspective, the concept of film will be theoretically redefined. Simultaneously, there will be efforts to apply this reconstruction and redefinition of film to institutions and policies.
In addition, the forum will also consider the development of media technology and the innovative change occurring in films. Digital visual effects experts will discuss the problems in the preservation, restoration, collection, and sharing of data that arise in the process of the digital transformation of movies, and diagnose the present state of cinema, which is changing with the appearance of digital visual effect (VFX), extended reality (XR), and virtual production, from an artistic, industrial, and cultural perspective. The forum will also provide useful information and insight on the direction of future cinema in regards to the development of media technology.
