Launched in 1996 as a non-competitive film festival, the Busan International Film Festival will take a bold step forward in 2025 by transitioning into a competitive festival to mark its 30th edition.
The newly established Busan Award will present the most artistically accomplished Asian films produced over the past year. The recipient of the Grand Prize will have the honour of closing the festival as the Closing Film, marking a grand finale to the celebration.
The award trophy isn’t just a symbol – it’s a celebration of the dream and passion of Asian filmmakers. The trophy will be designed by Apichatpong Weerasethakul, a renowned Thai filmmaker and installation artist. He made a powerful impression on the global film scene when he won the Palme d'Or at the 63rd Cannes Film Festival in 2010 with Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives. He also shares a special connection with BIFF, having had five of his previous works screened at BIFF.
In addition, the existing sections ‘New Currents’ and ‘Korean Cinema Today - Vision’ will be restructured into two expanded strands: Vision - Asia and Vision - Korea, offering a broader and more insightful perspective on the current landscape of Asian independent cinema.
