Overview

All events including the Opening and Closing Ceremonies canceled; international invitations suspended

All outdoor events that would attract crowds including the Red Carpet, Opening and Closing Ceremonies, Outdoor Greeting, Open Talk, and Meet the Guest: Talk to Talk are canceled. These measures taken by the festival are in alignment with the central government’s Level Two social distancing guidelines, placed in order to prevent large crowds from gathering. Accreditation for film industry professionals and press is suspended as well. There will not be any no international guests invited to the festival, nor will various centers and lounges for audiences and guests be open. All judging will take place online.

Strict preventive measures

The Busan International Film Festival will take strict preventive measures in compliance with the governmental guidelines. The theater capacity will be capped regardless of size, and social distancing will be enforced in both indoor and outdoor theaters. Other preventive measures such as temperature measurements, QR code electronic registration, and thorough disinfection will be conducted. All seats are to be reserved online and or on mobile to prevent crowds from gathering at the festival site.

Focusing on film screenings

Film festivals typically provide various opportunities for audiences to meet filmmakers; however, the 25th Busan International Film Festival will minimize face-to-face interactions. The festival will ensure that small audiences will be able to have full cinematic experiences in theaters. Online Q&As will take place for non-Korean films. The Busan International Film Festival will be faithful to the fundamental role of film festivals in these unprecedented times.

Business and forum programs held online

Asian Contents & Film Market (formerly known as Asian Film Market’s new name), Asian Project Market, and Forum BIFF will be held online. Although face-to-face interactions are important in business and forum programs, the Busan International Film Festival feels it necessary to host such programs during this period of overall stagnation in the film industry and will facilitate business meetings online.

Asian Film Awards and Asia Contents Awards 2020 held online

The Asian Film Awards is a celebration of excellence in Asian cinema that has previously been held in Hong Kong and Macao. Although it was planned to be held in Busan during the Busan International Film Festival period, the Asian Film Awards winners will instead be announced online due to the COVID-19 outbreak. The Asia Contents Awards, established last year to recognize outstanding ASEAN dramas, will announce winners in 10 categories through an online awards ceremony without an on-site audience.

Online registration and mobile ticketing

All seats will be reserved online, and there will be no on-site ticket booth. Only those with mobile tickets will be able to enter Cinemountain at Busan Cinema Center.
