Program Note
Someone who kills animals by trade is a ‘butcher’; someone who kills people by impulse is a ‘murderer’. Dumitru is both, and seemingly unable to be otherwise. On the train home after his release from prison, he immediately resorts to his old ways: a card game with some Gypsies gets out of hand and leads to a death. Initially, he seems to get away with that and continues on his journey. At home, his young wife is waiting for him. Then he finds out that she is pregnant by his brother. Another murder ensues. And that won’t be the last. Having by now become a serial killer, Dumitru feels his life is unbearable and wants to die. But he discovers he can’t. God, it turns out, has other plans for him. Dragin has created a strikingly surreal world for his dark yet sometimes comic parable.
