Program Note
In a frenzy, actor Santiago Miranda storms out of the taping of the national soap opera, The Loves of the Liberator based on the life of the great South American hero, Simon Bolivar. What prompts Miranda’s fury is the script, which he considers not only poorly written but filled with lies. So he sets himself the task of rewriting and directing the remaining episodes himself in an effort to rectify the mistakes of the past. However, as the project progresses, he teeters between lucidity and madness. The madness is best illustrated when he kidnaps the President of Colombia an act he undertakes to bring about a meeting among the Presidents of all “Bolivarian” nations. This, he believes, will lead to the completion of his unfinished dream: “The Great Colombia.” Bolivar Is Me is a black comedy that depicts, with great irony and some bitterness, the cruel, violent, yet wonderful world in which all Latin Americans of the 21st Century live.
