In 1770, Marianne, a painter, is asked to take a portrait Elois, a bride-to-be who has just come from a convent. Unwilling to accept the fate of marriage, Elois refuses to pose for a portrait, and Marianne, who has to complete the painting, begins to observe her in secret. It is the fourth feature and the first period drama by Director Celine Sciamma, who has emerged as one of the most popular female directors with Tomboy (2011). The reinterpretation of Orpheus and Eurydice′s myth through the two heroines in the film is exquisitely linked to the final scene of the sad reunion, boosting the perfection of the work. The delicate feelings of the two women are melted into the neat French and elegant images.
“Don’t regret but remember.” It is Céline SCIAMMA′s aphorism to the people whose love never fulfilled. (SEO Seunghee)
