Program note

Why Has Bodhi-Dharma Left for the East? is remembered as an unprecedented attempt in Korean cinema history and an achievement of exceptional aesthetics. When Abbas KIAROSTAMI’s Where Is My Friend’s Home won the third prize at the 1989 Locarno International Film Festival, this film won the grand prize. The episode is often mentioned whenever we talk about this film. The film Why Has Bodhi-Dharma Left for the East?captures the earnest pain and anguish of a young monk Kibong, with its original philosophy and aesthetics, and it is receiving higher praise as time goes by. Especially, this screening is taking place with the precious consent and acceptance of Director BAE Yong-kyoon, who has reportedly been out of touch with the outside world for decades.
