Claudia is a 22-year-old single mom, living with her precocious six-year-old daughter, Marghe. When they are evicted from their home for failing to pay the rent, Claudia leaves Marghe with an old woman who lives next door and goes job searching. The old woman is a devout Catholic who has known Marghe since Claudia was pregnant with her. With her best friend and a few of swindlers claiming to be filmmakers she meets by chance, Claudia goes tries to make money, but the reality is not so inviting. Meanwhile, Marghe tries hard to hold on to her own identity and philosophy under the old woman’s supervision and the neighborhood children’s judging gazes.
Directed by Mohsen MAKHMALBAF, Marghe and Her Mother was filmed in Italy with Italian actors, and addresses the issues of unemployment and poverty of Italian youth and marginalized groups. MAKHMALBAF continues his cinematic exploration of crime and punishment, forgiveness and salvation. Marghe and Her Mother is a MAKHMALBAF-style allegorical film. (PARK Sun Young)
