Gavino is a six-year-old boy who attends an elementary school in Siligo, Sardinia Island. However, his father sends him to the mountain where the boy must live as a shepherd. Gavino dreams of seeing the wide world, but growing up under an authoritarian and violent father who regards him as a means of making a living, he is forced to join the army. Although unwillingly in the military, Gavino gets a chance to study various languages. Once discharged and now an adult, he returns to Sardinia as an adult who can stand up to his father. Brothers Paolo and Vittorio Taviani셲 Padre Padrone is based on an autobiographical book of the same title by Gavino Ledda, a Sardinian dialect linguist. Ledda actually appears in the movie. Borrowing documentary and theatrical devices, the film describes the main character쾠 growth, facing his tyrannical father but not breaking his free will despite the hardships. It won the Palme d셅r at Cannes in 1977. Vittorio Taviani passed away in April of this year at the age of 88.
