In December 1956, a decade after screening the first Sinhala movie, hails a turning point in the history of Sri Lankan cinema with Rekava becoming the first globally celebrated movie made in Sri Lankan cinema marking Sri Lanka in the world cinema map, screening under the translated name of 쁋ine of destiny at the prestigious 쏤estival De Cannes in 1957. Another remarkable aspect of Rekava was that it was shot entirely on location outside a studio bringing the real taste of cinema. Unfolding a story of a village boy who is thought to have healing powers, the images and the scenes of Rekava marks itself in the realist cinema category in the history of Sri Lankan cinema. The masterpiece could be considered the pioneer production in Sri Lankan cinema to include a psychological theme and initiate discourses on realistic issues breaking the 쁲ynthetic and melodramatic trends prior to 1956. Even to-date, in the year of death of the great Dr. Lester James Peries, Rekava is 쁲acred and reclaimed around the world among film makers of many generations. (Vimukthi)
