Famous Parisian playboy, Marquis des Arcis, works to attract the elegant widow, Madame de La Pommeraye. She refuses his courtship because she is realistic, but she ends up loving him. Knowing he has changed his mind after short period they were together, Madame de La Pommeraye plans to take revenge. Setting an elaborate trap, she introduces him to the beautiful Mademoiselle de Joncquières and her mother. Both women are actually prostitutes playing roles in a set-up to ensnare Marquis des Arcis, making him fall in love with Mademoiselle de Joncquières. Madame de La Pommeraye waits for him to become a laughingstock in social circles and be ruined. As planned, he falls in love and marries her with all his heart. Will Madame de La Pommeraye be able to get revenge? The hymns and hypocrisy of love occasion witty lines of dialogue, and the actors′ delicate portrayals draws us into the story. The camera brilliantly captures Mademoiselle de Joncquières as a pure being in a gaze of Marquis des Arcis who falls in love with her. This allure film reminds us of impressionist paintings by reproducing the beautiful scenery and costumes that capture the times. (Erica Nam)
