The first feature film completed in Czechoslovakia by director Milos Forman, the digitally restored film chronicles somewhat introverted and timid Czech boy Peter쾠 meaningless daily routine. Peter starts working as a security guard in an unmanned store, hangs out with his friends on the beach, goes to a dance party with his girlfriend, and listens to his oppressive father쾠 sermon. A movie that captures the daily life of sixteen-year-old Peter has the power to convey the hypocrisy of the society back then. Through the images of a strict and doctrinal father, the differences and conflicts between generations are also vividly captured. Black Peter was the inspiration for the Czechoslovakian New Wave, which is compared with Italian neorealism in that it captures natural social images by employing professional and non-professional actors together without a dramatic system봞nd criticizes the times. Early in the film, Peter is keeping shop, and nervously following around a middle-aged man who has stolen something. It is a masterful scene that resonates throughout the movie. (Lee Seungmin)
