Dongjin LEE, the main character of I Am A Pilot, used to think himself very ordinary. That is why he attempted all kinds of difficult adventures and now has an interesting resume—triathlon, climbing the Himalayas, Amazon marathon, traversing North America on a bicycle, and crossing Mongolia on horseback. And finally, he is trying to realize his long-cherished dream of becoming a pilot. I Am A Pilot is a story of an ordinary or perhaps an extraordinary youth with a big dream and a bigger heart. Unfortunately, the only thing he lacks is money. LEE succeeds in receiving a scholarship at an aviation school in the United States by proposing that he makes a film to promote the school. Thus his two projects begin—becoming a pilot and making a film about becoming a pilot. I Am A Pilot is the result of his two projects. Following the big picture that LEE designed, director KIM Daehyun records the details of LEE’s days at the aviation school and superimposes journal-like narration by LEE. The 11 months LEE spends at the aviation school to get his pilot’s license unfolds dramatically as though according to a script. This film tells the story of an extraordinary challenge taken on by an honest Korean youth without pretense or vanity. (KANG Sowon)
