CHOI Seung Yoon, a choreographer who received funding from a cultural foundation, decides to make a film rather than simply document the stage performance. She sends a letter to filmmaker KIM Namsuk, asking for help, and he replies, “Do as you like. Films are created in all kinds of different ways.” CHOI invites KIM to co-direct I By You BY Everybody, and thus the film begins. It seems as though KIM stays on the outside simply as a consultant, but his style pervades the film. Supported by KIM’s cinematic style, CHOI looks for a filming method that suits her and meets with four younger choreographers. The stories of poor, young artists with a passion for dance but a clouded future unfolds in the film, and their stories come together in one final performance project. The film’s title I By You By Everybody is also the title of this dance performance. I By You By Everybody captures film and dance, art and daily life, ideals and survival, and stories of youth with a subtle touch of a fiction film. (KANG Sowon)
