Program Note
12-year-old Zain is in a juvenile prison for stabbing someone with a knife, but he wants to sue his parents. With neither an official registered identification card nor birth certificate, he doesn’t even know his birthdate. When the judge asks him why he wants to sue the parents, Zain answers, “Because they gave me life.” The Jury prize -winner at the 2018 Cannes, Nadine Labaki’s Capernaum depicts a tragic picture of Beirut and its people. Tangled up inside with countless others at a chaotic home, the children have nowhere else to go other than the streets, where only the strong survive. It is as hopeless as an image from hell. Rather than following the courtroom story, the film shows the life of people in the hopeless city with a sensitive camera. For veracity, the children who play Zain and his sister were cast from the street. Zain is a 10-year-old delivery boy on the street in real life and the girl who plays his sister is a Syrian refugee who sells chewing gum in the street. (Kim Young-Woo)
