Program Note
Middle-aged widower Tetsuro finds an unconscious young man on a river bank. When the man wakes up he says his name is ‘Shinichi’, but nothing more. It is apparent that Shinichi tried to commit suicide, so Tetsuro provides him shelter at his home, gives him a job and treats him like his own son. Shinichi gradually warms up to Tetsuro and tries to confess his past, but Tetsuro has his own secrets as well. The townspeople are curious about the newcomer but begin to suspect Shinichi when a strange rumor spreads. Debut director Hirose Nanako has worked as an assistant to Kore-eda Hirokazu and Nishikawa Miwa, and the abundance of experience is evidenced in her gentle insight and solid directing, capturing the frustrations and anguish of a young man trying to escape the demons from his past. Yagira Yuya, who became the youngest winner of the Best Actor Award at Cannes Film Festival for his role in Nobody Knows, effectively portrays Shinichi riding on waves of fear and anxiety, subtly suggested through an indifferent demeanor and hesitant smiles.
