Program Note
Olivia, Eloi and Guille, get together and travel from Barcelona to Berlin to make a surprise visit on Comas, to celebrate his birthday. When they arrive at his door, however, Comas does not seem very happy to see them, and things become increasingly awkward between them as time passes. Finally, on the morning of his birthday, Comas leaves his friends and disappears, making things worse. Distances is Elena Trape’s second feature film after her debut film, Blog (2010). The situation the four friends find themselves in is quite ordinary and realistic, but the film captures the three-day progression of their conflicting emotions with a delicate rhythm in a relatable story. As the story progresses, things slowly come to a boiling point; past relationships, a friend’s pretentiousness that one couldn’t quite address, and inferiority complexes all come to fore. Perhaps what kept the friends apart was not the actual distance between them, but the distance already existed in what they call friendship. (Jin Park)
