Program Note
In the summer of 2017 when police violence against African-Americans shocked the entire nation, the African-American community in the southern United States raised its voice in protest against deep-rooted racism and violence. Italian documentary filmmaker Roberto Minervini, who visited Busan in 2015 with The Other Side, once again shines light on a disturbing side of American society. His new film reflects the diverse stories of African-Americans living in the southern United States, telling us how deeply the history of racial discrimination has penetrated their lives, and how the violence has caused so much damage and fear. People of various ages, ordinary neighbors with simple dreams, reveal their wounds and scars on the black and white screen. The film makes the audience hear and witness their memories and sufferings, due to racism past and present. Through these intimate testimonies, the audience will understand the effects of social violence in a crazy society, in the same way they would by sharing an experience with their neighbors, instead of just the tiresome drone of empty slogans from activists.
