Program Note
Elisa, on a verge of divorce, leaves Paris with her son Noe to settle in her hometown of Dunkerque to find the biological mother who gave her up for adoption 30 years before. As Ounie Lecomte’s second feature film after A Brand New Life (produced by Lee Chang-dong), which opened the coproduction between Korea and France, the film earned a great deal of attention in France. In the first part of the film the camera shows the protagonist who sits in a train, facing the reverse direction, symbolically suggesting the film’s theme: questions about returning to the past and the roots. The camera is sophisticated in how it follows the emotions of the protagonist throughout the film, and shows Elisa and her biological mother’s lives side by side. In this regard, Noe’s rather curly hair has significant meaning. To have a child or not, to raise it or not is also Elisa’s concern as a mother. At the end, the choice Elisa makes is a fight with life. In the latter part of the film, Elisa eventually reconciles those ideas with herself. In promising director Lecomte’s latest film, Celine Sallette who impressed us by not sparing herself in Geronimo, turns in an incredible performance as Elisa. (RHEE Soue-won)
